A Remedy For That Frown

By Dern Heatherton

Botox is the most commonly performed "non-surgical" cosmetic procedure in the world. The price point is very attractive and affordable. The product has been tested and used extensively for years. And the safety record of Botox is exceptional.

Not surprisingly, the treatment of the frown lines is one of the most popular treatment procedures for Botox patients. When you inject the frown muscle with an adequate dose of Botox Cosmetic, it stops moving. As a result, the frown line diminishes. The frown lines disappear because the frown muscle can no longer contract and thus can no longer wrinkle up the overlying skin.

The frown lines between the eyes are the most common area treated with Botox. Botox was actually approved for frown lines in 2002 by the FDA. The popularity of treating the frown lines with Botox is the high rate of patient satisfaction with the results. Botox smooths out the vertical lines between the brows. This gives patients a more refreshed and relaxed appearance. Some patients say it eliminates their "angry" look.

Candidates for cosmetic surgery should be in generally good physical health and must be candid with their physician about any drugs they are taking. Your medical history should include oral contraceptives and estrogen replacement, vitamins, and herbal medications. Remember, these can impact blood clotting and could increase surgical risk.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to a patient that they should have stopped using certain medications or even altered behaviour such as smoking. It is up to the patient to take this responsibility for self education seriously.

To achieve optimal results, doctors recommend that patients take the following precautionary measures:

- Wait 24 hours before engaging in strenuous activity or exercise

- Do your best to stay upright for 4-5 hours after the injections

- The treated area or areas should not be massaged

- As directed by your doctor, be sure to follow the routine of your daily facial exercises

- And be sure wear sun block

You want to let the Botox settle, so it is recommended that in the recovery period, you limit your muscle movements as best as you can.

On average, the effects of Botox injections last anywhere from 3-6 months. After those six months, facial lines and wrinkles will start to reappear, though not as prominently as prior to the procedure. Naturally, when this occurs, patients can opt to have their Botox treatment repeated. The results of repeated Botox procedures will be lasting progressively longer with each treatment. In other words, a patient will require fewer procedures to achieve their desired results.
